5 Things to Consider Before Building

Alpine Builders knows that finding the right company to fit your needs can be a difficult process. There are so many different things to think about before trusting someone to build the building of your dreams. Check out this list we’ve created to simplify the process:

What is your dream building?

How much space would you need? Are we building your dream home? Your dream shop? What’s your ideal exterior? Interior? With Alpine Builders you can dream big! It is our job to help you design a building that you love, all while staying within your budget.

How will you use it?

Are you imagining a garage to store all of your big toys? Agricultural equipment? We suggest having the concrete sealed with an epoxy paint or sealer to make wiping up oil spills easy. We can also add extra storage space by adding a loft, or an extra few feet to the square footage. Your building can be designed to fit all of your needs seamlessly.

Where will your building be?

Is the plan for the building to be convenient to your home, or are you imagining it on the outskirts of your property? If that is the case, it is important to find out if there are any setback conditions. Are there any covenants attached to your property that could affect your plans? Will your building need septic or water to function? All important things to consider before you begin building.

Post Frame vs. Stud Frame?

Post frame buildings consist of posts that are buried in the ground, approximately 8 feet across.

It is common knowledge that when you bury wooden posts in the ground, eventually, maybe years down the road, the posts can rot away because of moisture in the ground, compromising the quality of your post frame building Here at Alpine Custom Builders, we do things differently. With over 12 years of experience, we have learned ways to remedy this problem and deliver quality workmanship that will last a lifetime.

First, we dig a hole in the ground for the post. We use high quality, treated Glulam Columns (50 year limited warranty). At the bottom of the hole we place a 5×16 round concrete “cookie” before placing the post on top of it. This avoids the post sinking and settling.  For uplift protection, we use fiberglass rebar and cover and compact with soil, anchoring the post firmly into the ground. For extra protection, we offer post protectors made of plastic to cover the bottom part of the post all the way to ground level so that no part of the wooden post is exposed to dirt. Another option is to bury the post in concrete all the way to ground level.

Stud frame buildings are built with 2×6 posts, placed 2 feet apart and they rest on top of a concrete pad. Though stud frames can be more costly, they help make the interior easier to finish, which is ideal to have the beautiful home you have been imagining.
